Encryption – Why It Really Matters ??  When you are working on the move etc

A year or so ago a lawyer friend of mine specialising in divorce had her nearly new laptop stolen at an airport and rang me distraught. What was in fact upsetting her the most was the loss of her confidential data and concerns about her clients confidentiality etc. Luckily she had only loaded a certain number of client files to her hard drive. It could have been a hell of a lot worse!!!

At that time Like my friend and I am very sure many of YOU, my own  laptop didn’t have any inbuilt protection NAMELY ENCRYPTION- despite the fact that I travelled a lot Working on the Go and was at risk of laptop theft like everyone else. That phone call led me to action to do some internet nosing because I am sure you will agree that the thought of some Weirdo /Stranger or Worse Still some Criminal !! having access to my  laptop and pouring over everything confidential on the hard drive- Horrified Me !!!.

After some research 2 Solutions Presented Themselves as relatively easy,  and going a long way towards  protecting my most important data on my laptop

Thanks for this timely post as I’ve been thinking about online security and how safe our things really are especially with laptops. I rarely travel so don’t need to bring my laptop especially now I work on my iPhone but even with iPhones, I’m sure there are security issues, one must be mindful of too. We always think nothing bad will happen until it happens.

      Thanks for the tips!

      Janette

Oh my, wish I’d known you during my days in travel! I spent half my life on the road schlepping thousands of dollars of digital equipment with me. One time I actually took a dive over a table at an airport coffee shop – I only looked away for a second to pick up something and the guy had his hands on my laptop … the glamorous life of a road warrior! Thanks for sharing this great information.

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

I well relate to your story of being a road warrior and also the baggage allowances do not make it easy while you travel these days. All the best and take care.

    • This is interesting and good to know.
I don’t have much of my client’s confidential info on my laptop just because of the nature of my work and the little that I have is Encrypt because those docs have a pass-code and cannot be opened without it.

But I know that what you are sharing here is valuable and I’ll be spreading your blog around. I know that many people will be grateful to read it 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to write this post. Much appreciated.

      Oh Rosie!

Whenever I pop over to your site I feel your eyes are on me as you write! I really must add this to my to do list and better put it towards the top and make sure I have done something before I leave the house with the laptop or netbook.

That said those strange types you mentioned the information hackers though could be just in a car outside though couldn’t they? – On second thoughts I’d better do this today!

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

Sadie, you are very welcome back to this blog. Life and working on line can be quite a balancing trick for all of us , but security should be a priority as the hackers do not seem to take holidays especially in a down turn. I also really appreciate the excellent advice you give on your blog and your updates. All the best Rosie.

I am afraid that lots of people view this like they do most insurance products with a “It will never happen to me” attitude.

Of course, that may well turn out to be the case but why would anyone run such a risk when the prevention is at best free or at worst very affordable.
