Love reading about the latest toys and tools and this sounds great. I’m planning to go back out “on the road” for awhile next year so it’s really helpful to learning about products like this. Thanks!

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

Marquita, delighted you found this a helpful tip. It is great the way you have time to find the right tools for you to keep up to date when you are working on the road next week. I going to London later in the week to a business event and will be working on go myself in airports etc. It is great to see you returning to working on the go. Take Care Rosemary

      Hi Rosemary,

I bought Dragon Naturally Speaking years ago for my husband, who’s not a very good typist. He used it for a while but that was it. I’m sure that voice recognition has gotten better over the years, though. It took time to get it set up before, helping it learn your voice and such, is that still the case? I imagine it has to be a difficult thing considering all the accents and all. It’s pretty amazing that they can do this type of thing these days. There’s no stopping technology now!

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

Deb, We have been using it for several years. But the first edition we got there was quite a lot of training but it was well worth the effort because it saved us paying wages for typing. But the current versions are great and especially for being productive on the move. Many thanks for comment. All the best Rosemary

    • Hi Rosemary,

Great post.. I too love gadgets and I’m an iPhone fanatic.

Looking forward to picking up and iPad soon as well!

Thanks for sharing this and will check it out!

    • Hello Rosemary,

I currently do not have a iPad or iPhone as of yet, but after watching a video from the blog world seminar, I realize I have to step up my marketing game.

As I learned in the video, it does not matter if I really want to use these modern techy things or not, it’s not about me so much as it is being able to give the marketplace any and all means of sdoing business with me and building that relationship.

I have herad of the dragon software for computers. I’ve been considering getting it to speed up my blogging and article writing.

I imagine that would be even better to have the app to use on the go with the iPad & iPhones.

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

Willie, many thanks for your comment, yes it if you are writing a lot of articles it would make your life a lot easier. I started using it several years ago to cut down on time and the cost of a typist. But now it makes my online and offline work so much easier. If you have any suggestions for this blog I would love to hear from you. All the best Rosemary

      Hello Rosie,

I have the PC desktop version of Dragon now, I really need to take some time out to programme it to understand my voice;- I started to do the reading aloud of the texts but put it to one side to concentrate on great priorities on my to do list. I know once I take the time out for this Dragon is going to save me heaps of time.

      Thanks for sharing 🙂

        Hi Sadie,

I love learning about new tools, and there certainly are a lot these days, aren’t there?! 🙂 I will definitely be checking the Dragon Dictation out, although I have to be honest, I am a really fast typer and am not sure I think speaking it would make it go all that much faster. But certainly worth a try!

Thanks for the great recommendation, Rosemary!

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

Beth, delighted to see your feed back. I have to say it makes a great difference for me when I am working on the go. Especially as I hate to not keep up to date with work when I am out and about. All the best Rosemary

This seems quite interesting. I would like to know how much this application costs and how easy it would be to install. I am not technologically sophisticated. Do you have any idea how I could use this application to advance my web site which is dedicated to diabetes education.

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

many thanks for your comment. Unfortunately in my country I cannot download the Dragon app for my iPhone or iPad because it is not available in my local iTunes Store and I believe the reason is to do with telephonics rather than software. However I have friends in the USA /UK who use it and swear by it – in replying to comments on Facebook and social media and they find the app very good. From talking to them though I believe the app would be more limited if you are doing lengthy text work. The app may be available from your local iTunes Store in your country and all you have to do is check. Dragon software when you master it is not that difficult at all. I note that you are running a diabetes information site and in those circumstances I am presuming that you have quite a lot of text work to do in writing articles and posting information. I would strongly recommend that you take the plunge and purchase from Dragon their premium version 11 software for PC. There is a version available for MAC also. The beauty of the premium version is that you can use a portable digital recorder to record all of your thoughts and articles on the move and let the software later transcribe all of that into text for you. I can tell you that personally I would be absolutely lost without this software because whilst I am an okay typist that is all I am. I should tell you that Dragon are shortly releasing version 11.5 (which I am entitled to a free upgrade on) and I will be writing a blog post about it in about 3 to 4 weeks time . One extra advantage of 11.5 I believe will be the fact that you will be able to use your iPhone as a wireless digital dictation device. Voice recognition has its detractors but believe me there is no earthly way that I could do my posts as quickly by just typing and I say this honestly to you. Check out my other blog posts about Dragon to get a better flavour. It used to be a very expensive program but now represents excellent value for money. I will be posting within the next 10 days another post in relation to how you can use your iPhone as a portable digital recording device that you can use in conjunction with Dragon also, I have recently tried this out with great success so keep an eye out for the upcoming post.

It’s always helpful to have a potentially useful production tool like this reviewed. I too was curious about how the voice recognition technology had advanced. I recall it being quite laborious some ten or so years ago when I first tried it, but realize things would have vastly improved since then. Thank you for the review, Rosie. Much appreciated.

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

Yes I remember our first version of voice recognition took a lot of patience and determination to train. I was delighted all those years ago that I did not give up as it saved so much time which is money for all of us in business. But since then these glitches have been sorted and it is very accurate and makes me so much more efficient. If you have any suggestions for this blog do feel free to contact me. All the best Rosemary

Very nice Rosemary while I don’t own and ipad I recently found out that windows 7 has their own speech recognition. I have played around with it and found it very interesting.

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

Have you started using the voice recognition for serious work. It is several years ago I started using Dragon due to keeping an eye on overheads for an offline business. As we all can talk quicker than we can type. Saving time saved paying wages. All the best Rosemary

    • Wow, Rosemary, I am LOVING this blog!! I HATE trying to text or send status updates from my iphone cos I can’t use the keypad fast enough. This sounds right up my street. Thanks for the tip 🙂

      • Rosemary O'Shaughnessy

You are very welcome and delighted you like this tip. I can talk a lot quicker than I can type that is for sure. Take care Rosemary

    • Deb

      Hi Rosemary,

Do you know if you have to be online to use the pc version? I think for the ipad, you need to be connected to the internet for dragon dictate to work. I definitely think this will be helpful.

Have you tried the windows 7 speech recognition? I did not find it was accurate, but I don’t have a good microphone either.

      • rosie54

        Hi Deb,

It does require a data connection for the app to work, Here is the details from apple http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dragon-dictation/id341446764?mt=8 . Deb I would suggest you check our other article which lets to do long text docs but you need to use your laptop or desktop pc http://workingonthego.net/?s=pureaudio.

Yes we have tried windows 7 speech recognition – yes it is free – yes we have a high quality microphone but we did not find it good at all. Others might disagree but that is our honest opinion. All the best Rosemary
